Apart from being water deficit, India is among the countries which also have polluted water sources. Groundwater happens to be the prime source to extract water. In the recent studies, startling revelations have surfaced. Uranium contamination has found in the groundwater across several states in India. In some areas the contamination level was above the permissible limit set by World Health Organization. Bihar was among the high risk areas. A joint research by University of Manchester, UK and Mahavir Cancer Institute and Research Centre, Phulwarisharif in Patna has revealed that uranium contamination in the groundwater has been found in at least 10 districts of Bihar. In another 2007 study, water bodies were found to be contaminated with Arsenic. It should be known that both Uranium and Arsenic pose high health risk, and can cause skin disorders, varied forms of cancer and other diseases. Central ground water board in collaboration with Duke University (U.S.A) has published a report which says that, Andhra Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Gujarat, Hariyana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand and Bihar is under the contamination zone.
