Cyber bullying has become common these days. Every now and then, girls and boys face sexual harassment either online or offline. People with fake accounts make sexual comment or float obscene pictures to others. It gets very tough when it comes to tracing a person online who is sitting on the other side of the screen.
Not far ago all of us witnessed an Instagram scandal of ‘Bois locker room’, where teenage boys from Delhi were allegedly involved in a chat room which included obscene pictures of girls and conversation of raping girls. The whole issue flared up on May 3rd, 2020, when a member of the group leaked the screenshots of the chats, exposing the boys. After that, the social media was filled with screenshots, creating a movement of ‘#boyslockerroom’, which was retweeted over 30,000 times. Boys in the age group of 15 to 18 and studying in reputed schools were involved in the matter. It is disturbing to see that boys of this age group with good and educated family backgrounds are body-shaming and slut-shaming their classmates.
However, after further investigations, it was revealed that there were two different platforms from where the screenshot was leaked. A girl took on a fake name ‘Siddharth’ and suggested a plan of ‘provoking sexual assault on herself’ to a male friend on Snapchat. Later a police official said that the ‘Bois locker room’ and ‘Snapchat screenshot’s were two different matters.
The chief of Delhi Commission for Women, Swati Maliwal, and the National Commission of Protection of Child, issued several notices to Instagram as well as to Delhi police for further actions. The screenshots showed many conversations where these boys from class 11th and 12th were sexually harassing their classmates, posting obscene pictures of young girls without their consent, and making sexual comments over them. The group, not only includes those comments but morphed photos of young girls as well.
In a statement, a Facebook-owned Instagram spokesperson said: “We absolutely do not allow behaviour that promotes sexual violence or exploits anyone, especially women and young people, and having actioned content violating our community standards we were made aware of it” reported by NDTV’s e – news portal.
Even after the whole fiasco, another group by the name of ‘Bois locker room 2.0’ was created immediately on 4th May 2020, showing the shamelessness of these teenage boys. However soon after the account was created, it was deleted by Instagram for violating the guidelines. While this scandal was going on, another set of screenshots floated from another group called ‘Jai ka shirt skrt gang’ over the internet whose members were found talking about raping girls.
The whole event brought chills to the spine of people, that even the young boys and girls despite their good education have the audacity to rape girls.
