Singh SabhaCondemns Security Forces Firing on Muslims in W Bengal

Condemning the killing of four Muslims in the firing by the Central Security forces in Cooch Behar in West Bengal the Sikh intellectuals alleged that the killing was not the outcome of the law and order problem but a politically inspired act aimed at polarising the voters on communal lines- a known practice of the Hindutva forces.

Those killed at a polling station on 10 April —Hamidul Mian, Monirujjaman Mian and Noor Alam Mian– were migrant labourers who had returned to their native place to vote in the ongoing West Bengal Assembly elections. Along with them an 18 year old Samiul Haq, working in a cyber café was also killed in the firing. In a separate incident another first-timer voter and a low caste Hindu was also killed as he queued up to vote.

The Sikh intellectuals, associated with the Kendri Sri Guru Singh Sabha support TMC leader Mamata Banerjee stand on the issue as she had repeatedly accused that that Central forces deployed by the Election Commission to conduct free and fair elections in West Bengal had been acting as an agent to help the BJP out to capture power by hook and crook.

We also support the TMC contention that the killings were “targeted” and demand independent inquiry into the incident as the Central forces claim that they had fired in self-defense, does not hold water.

Most unfortunate development in West Bengal polls is that the top BJP leaders and the Prime Minister and Home Minister have crossed all limits of niceties the offices they hold demand and went ahead to polarize the society on religious lines and injected casteism in a big way for the first time. Such provincial mentality shown by the BJP rulers has reduced the electioneering to a low level of exchanging invectives in a street brawl.
