Is Reformation of Indian Democracy Possible ?

It is historically evident that democracy system is the best rather than any other political systems which may ensure good governing and governance. There is no alternative of this system. It transforms the people from silent spectators to participants.  Indian democracy is witnessing it as largest democracy of the world.

Unfortunately, Indian democracy has been transformed into the political party based democracy. The political party(ies) and government are synonymous. This practice does not bother theoretical favour/support or objection. Here, the political parties (either in the rule or as opponents) are very much arrogant, aggressive and desperate to consume power and authority by hook and crook. The principles and agendas of a particular political party are derided to form government, and they think that it is the only way to make good to its voters. Capture of power and authority are the absolute policy of the political parties. The people’s government has become the government of the particular political party(ies) in the ruling position. It has been cultivating a culture of disrespect, disregard and competition among different political parties. The political party(ies) in the rule claims that it is doing absolutely for its citizen, while opponents disclaim as anti-citizen acts. Good or bad is self-explanatory to the people. Everybody of a party is devoting to serve the nation and its people. But formation of a government is victorious to a party as if a profit making business, when people who elect the government are indifferent

In a representative democracy or a constitutional democracy, government, opponent and electorates are the main three pillars. The political parties and election are the key processes to bridge these pillars into a line i.e a progressive nation according to citizen choices and participation because it strengthens the overall democratic processes and functions for tenure of 5 years (or less). A democratic government is for all who voted or did not (a party forms government after getting only around 40% votes). So, the government does not allow political favoritism of a political party.

A government should frame policy and programme in close consultation with the opponents through debate in the houses. A government should never deny that opponents are the part of government. As per the rules, an elected representative should not consider for a member of a parliamentary committee or like this where he/she has no active involvement in decision-making process. On the other hand, opponents would only propagate and criticize the government; it might not be functions of responsible opponents.

For implementation of each programme, the government should not use the concerned political party(ies) (representing the government). It should empower the bureaucratic system in true sense. It should be transparent and the out of the political party’s interference. The people have full confidence on this system, and it should be strengthened.

Thereafter, when the elected representatives (majority) of the political party(ies) form government, they should be detached from their political parties and their active involvement should restrict to make the government unbiased from any political colour. The government policy and programme are not of a political party. They would be free for their parties when the government would dissolve and the next election would declare.

The political parties (in government or its opponents) should have its own programme. The party(ies) in government should publicize and educate the people about merits of different policies and programme undertaken by the government. On the other part, opponents should have its own programme. It is not as if disrespect to the government, making chaos and anti-government in each aspect. Their work should be educated to the people about strategically drawbacks of the government, and they should share openly share their better planning than the ruling government. They might use the method of agitation and meeting, etc.

The reformation of Indian democracy would reduce political conflict and violence. It would bring peace, harmony and integration among people. People would enjoy their democracy freely. It would lead a progressive nation. At present, democracy is the cause of broken human relations and disharmony. It is enough to make people dominant of the political party. The democracy teaches and guides to be liberal in real sense. Democratic people are for all, and it should be “helping people to help themselves” unconditionally. Reformation of democracy would be really empowered people in participating government rather than voting right only. Democracy is the property of people. It is not inherited property of the leaders of different political parties. The political parties are only the linking agent of people and their democratic government.
